Save Aid, Save Lives

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, just announced he will slash the aid budget by over £4 billion. This is hugely worrying during a global pandemic that risks pushing 115 million people into extreme poverty. Every day aid is cut will see hundreds more people die unnecessarily. We need your help to tell the Government to reverse this damaging decision before it’s too late.

The 0.7% aid commitment has made amazing things happen - from millions of girls receiving an education to providing lifesaving vaccines to people around the world. We must make sure this lifeline is retained instead of being traded in for increases in defence spending.

Please take action by writing to your MP asking them to:

  • Write to the Prime Minister calling on him to protect the 0.7% aid target
  • Vote against any legislation that will reduce or revoke the 0.7% aid target
  • Use their voice to speak out about these cuts in Parliament

Act Now to Save UK Aid and Save Lives

Dear [Name of your MP],

In the face of the worst health crisis in over a century, when the poorest people in the world are facing the most difficult circumstances, it is unthinkable that the Government is considering cutting the aid budget. Cutting the UK’s lifeline to the world’s poorest communities could lead to tens of thousands of otherwise preventable deaths. I am writing to you to ask you to act now - save UK Aid to help save lives.

The 0.7% aid target was enshrined in law in 2015 and all major parties committed to retaining the target in their 2019 General Election manifestos. With Covid-19 we find ourselves in exceptional times but I am proud of our country's long commitment to international aid, and it is needed now more than ever.

Our aid has helped millions of girls around the world receive an education and ensured millions more receive lifesaving vaccines. It is an investment that literally saves lives as well as building our soft power and reputation as a truly Global Britain. We must make sure this crucial lifeline is retained.

This commitment is already responsive to changes in our economic circumstance – as the economy has shrunk in recent months the government has recouped nearly £3bn in aid this year. Further cuts would be a false economy and hinder efforts to tackle the virus.

As a constituent, I am asking you to please:

  • Write to the Prime Minister calling on him to protect the 0.7% aid target
  • Vote against any legislation that will reduce or revoke the 0.7% aid target
  • Use your voice to speak out about these cuts in Parliament

At a time when the Covid-19 crisis has shown us how interconnected we are, these cuts will make it harder for countries around the world to respond to and tackle the effects of Covid-19. As we’ve repeatedly heard, none of us will be safe until everyone is safe.

This is the wrong action to take in a pandemic and the wrong message to send ahead of the UK hosting the G7 and COP26 next year.

I am asking you to act now to save UK Aid, so that we can continue to save lives.

Best wishes,
