As Australia was ravaged by its worst bushfire season on record, we witnessed the impacts of climate change first hand: millions of hectares burnt, lives lost, thousands of homes gone and more than a billion animals killed.

Global heating has resulted in devastating droughts, extremely dry fuels and soils and record-breaking temperatures, all contributing to unprecedented and catastrophic fire conditions.

The climate crisis is here, now. The solutions already exist. As our nation unites to support the thousands of families impacted by this disaster, we must also work together to ensure that this is a turning point in our response to the global climate crisis.

2020 is a critical year in the fight for our future. A window that may largely determine whether the world charts a course to a bright and sustainable future or spirals further into climate catastrophe. The decisions made by governments, including our own, will profoundly impact the security and well being of communities here and worldwide for many generations.

We know that a future of zero poverty, zero carbon pollution, and jobs and prosperity for all is possible.

Now it’s time for all of us to lead the way.

Pressure is mounting for far stronger action to be taken to reduce the risk of even bigger disasters in future, particularly by ensuring that Australia finally breaks free from fossil fuels and plays its part in responding to the global climate crisis.

Big money and fossil fuel interests will fight hard to protect their profits and steal our future. The only defense we have is a united voice that stands up for communities against vested interests and holds our government to account.

Our government must find a path beyond coal, unlock Australia’s renewable energy potential, and support communities here and overseas with adapting to extreme weather and growing disaster risks.

It’s time to double down and build hope for a more just and sustainable future.

Now, more than ever, it’s time for us to work together and focus on real climate solutions that promise a better future for all Australians and our neighbours. The climate crisis is a global issue and it is time from Australia to lead the charge. The people and communities worst affected by this crisis are often those who have done the least to cause it.
